POSITION: COMMUNITY ADVOCATE (part-time non-exempt)

LOCATION: Los Angeles

PURPOSE: The Community Advocate will work with other TLC staff, partner organizations and community members to build the capacity of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals and allied organizations to address the economic/employment and health care barriers to equality, with an emphasis on engaging transgender people of color. To accomplish this, the Community Advocate will engage existing and newly emerging community leadership, build coalition partners among traditional and non-traditional allies, create leadership development and advocacy opportunities for transgender and gender non-conforming people, leverage relationships to build power to take on bigger policy issues, and work on winning concrete changes in institutional policies and practices. The Community Advocate will be housed in TLC’s Los Angeles office and will work closely with fellow staff, consultants, partners, and volunteers to carry out these transformative social change initiatives. Because TLC is a statewide organization, this position will include travel throughout California (including occasional weekend travel).
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The Community Advocate is responsible for coordinating the Transgender Law Center’s Southern California programs and advocacy. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Community Advocacy
  • Implement a work plan that includes strategies and timelines to accomplish TLC’s goals in Southern California
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with community leaders and community based organization
  • Provide referrals for legal assistance to Transgender Law Center attorneys and local community partners
Capacity Building
  • Facilitate activities thatbuild the capacity of transgender people and their allies to engage in organizing and policy advocacy on behalf of trans rights and economic justice
  • Conduct advocacy and educational workshops on a range of issues impacting the transgender community including, but not limited to, budget advocacy, transgender cultural competency, health care access, employment and housing discrimination
Leadership Development
  • Coordinate meetings for the Los Angeles HEALTH Council, currently focused on increasing access to homeless services for transgender people in L.A. County
  • Work with staff and other partners to coordinate TLC’s 2011 Annual Leadership Summit


  • Cultural competency in working with transgender communities and, in particular, transgender communities of color
  • Community organizing and/or policy advocacy experience (in a paid or volunteer position)
  • Basic understanding of employment, health, housing, and other areas in which transgender Californians experience discrimination
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write clearly, speak in public, and facilitate large and small meetings
  • Demonstrated ability to work without close supervision on both assigned and self-initiated tasks
  • Commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach to social change
  • Experience using standard office technology including Microsoft Office
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to play well with others


  • Spanish language proficiency (written and oral)
  • Experience working with a group to plan and implement social change strategies to address a pressing problem of systemic discrimination, isolation, and/or oppression
  • Education or work experience in public policy, public health, community organizing, community health, or related field
  • Associate or Bachelors Degree
  • Experience creating marketing materials and executing media campaigns

COMPENSATION: $15-$20 per hour, depending on experience
